Public transportation: How to get to Yosemite from Berkeley?
Question:
What would be the best way to get to Yosemite National Forest ie Half-Dome, etc. from Berkeley in California? No car, so would greyhound work or some rail system? thanks

Answer:
There are several ways to get to Yosemite. Essentially you need to break your trip into two parts - getting to Merced, CA, and getting to Yosemite Valley (where Half Dome is). To get to Merced, there are options on both the Greyhound Bus System, and Amtrak Rail Lines. Note though, that Amtrak may have legs of the journey on their own buses. www.greyhound.com www.amtrak.com Once you are in Merced, your best bet is the YARTS system. This bus system, based out of Merced, does routes to Yosemite and places along the Highway 140 corridor. www.yarts.com Pay close attention to schedules of all the components though. To catch buses and trains can come down to the minute.

Cheapest way to get to half moon bay from Berkeley without a car?
Question:
I'm looking for places to venture out. I'd like to see the coastlines here in California, but not having a car makes it hard to do so. What would be the easiest way to get to half moon bay? Or are there easier places I could visit? San Francisco is a little too close and easy to see. I'd like to go a little bit further out. Thank you

Answer:
You have to go to San Francisco first in order to get a bus to Half Moon Bay since it is south of San Francisco. I would catch BART to some point in San Francisco where you can catch a commuter bus to Half Moon Bay. Do a search on www.511.org

will parking tickets i acquired in California follow my car when re-registered in Georgia?
Question:
Iive accumulated a few tickets here in Berkeley and its time to registered but im moving to Georgia in few days . if i just blow off the ca. tickets will it show up when changing to Georgia registration and plates? Are they connected info wise like that?

Answer:
Yes they will show up if California sent them to a collection agency which most states do, also some states can and will suspend your license for this and then Georgia will definitely find out.. Try making an anonymous call to the California DMV from a pay phone and just ask to be on the safe side or just pay the fines..

Under restructuring GM to build twice as many cars -- in foreign factories? What do you think?
Question:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/07/A R2009050704336.html "According to an outline the company has been sharing privately with Washington legislators, the number of cars that GM sells in the United States and builds in Mexico, China and South Korea will roughly double. The proportion of GM cars sold domestically and manufactured in those low-wage countries will rise from 15 percent to 23 percent over the next five years, according to the figures contained in a 12-page presentation offered to lawmakers in response to their questions about overseas production. As a result, the long-simmering argument over U.S. manufacturers expanding production overseas -- normally arising between unions and private companies -- is about to engage the Obama administration. Essentially in control of the company, the president's autos task force faces an awkward choice: It can either require General Motors to keep more jobs at home, potentially raising labor costs at a company already beset with financial woes, or it can risk political fury by allowing the automaker to expand operations at lower-cost manufacturing locations. "It's an almost impossible dilemma," said former labor secretary Robert B. Reich, now a professor at the University of California-Berkeley. "GM is a global company -- so for that matter is AIG and the biggest Wall Street banks. That means that bailing them out doesn't necessarily redound to the benefit of the U.S. or American workers. "More significantly, it raises fundamental questions about the purpose of bailing out these big companies. If GM is going to do more of its production overseas, then why exactly are we saving GM?" Or AIG, etc? Didn't some of us ask this BEFORE the govt bailed them out? What do you think? Is this the return you expected on our 'investment'? This question was about were the bailouts worth it, not where is it better to have labor staged. What did we get for the money, again?

Answer:
Oh yeah. Let's outsource more jobs because that's worked out so well for us in the past. "Didn't some of us ask this BEFORE the govt bailed them out? " Ask hell. You, me, and a few others screamed at the top of our lungs that bailouts wouldn't work, and now they are outsourcing... Oh and Part Deux of the Bank bailouts is about to begin to the tune of another 75 billion. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing the same way over and over again while expecting a different result." Edit: The black helicopters are overhead again. Dammit I hate it when that happens... SoMEone: ROTFLMAO I have one for you that kicks ANYONE that walks behind her too close. She's a Nevada mustang rescue and is full of beans.

Things i need to do before i move down to California?!?>!?
Question:
I might move down to california for a good 6monhts, i might drive from ohio and Take my car down to California,. do i need rto register my car? get a new drivers liscense? how can i drie there legaly?!and where do i need to go if i move to the bay area. i..e Berkeley or San Fransicsco ??

Answer:
If you have a drivers license from another state you can drive in CA no problem, but as another responder noted you must get a CA license and registration if you are here more than a certain number of days, though I think there is some provision if you are only working in the state temporarily. The link below will take you to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles site. San Francisco and Berkeley are both very interesting and diverse places to live. Parking can be hard to come by in both cities, SF has a good bus system so you can get all around town very well without driving.

Who agrees that California have terrible public transportation?
Question:
Ok aside from San Francisco and Oakland/Berkeley, pretty much the rest of California has awful public transportation. Los Angeles- a city that lives on freeways, non-stop and go traffic, and has a cloud of smog that lies right above it..not surprising especially considering the number of cars this city has San Diego- pretty much in the same boat as LA for its huge dependence on cars..since it is nowhere as large as LA, the smog problem is not anywhere as bad San Jose- another city like LA and San Diego that is miles and miles of freeways and suburbs and not to mention next to non-existent public transportation..please dont tell me that light rail or caltrain is actually good..it is an absolute joke when you compare it to the L of Chicago or the T of Boston or the metro of DC or the subway of NY and during my visit to LA from the bay area, I drove 200 miles on my rental car just to go from the LAX airport to my hotel then to my job interview and then back to the airport..wow! is this normal?

Answer:
Yes, that commute is normal. Yes, public transit in SoCal sucks. But there's a reason for it: No other place on earth has this much sprawl. The time to build the infrastructure was decades ago, but politicians waffled, NIMBYS protested, and the job didn't get done. Now we pay the price.
