Are people allowed to drive in the left turning lane?
Question:
My girlfriend and I were involved in an accident where we were turning left out of a restaurant and we hit the side of an oncoming Miata. Now, traffic was deadlocked on this road that I was turning onto. The road has three lanes, eastbound, westbound, and a turning lane. We were turning to the east, the car was traveling west. The westbound lane was backed up about 200 feet from a stoplight, but the Miata sped into the turning lane (again, 200 feet early) and we hit it while trying to make the safe turn. My question is how far before a stoplight is a person allowed to be driving in the left turn lane, and essentially, whose fault the accident is. I live in Bentonville, Arkansas, and if an answer can be given, proof would be needed to give to the insurance representatives. Thank you in advance!

Answer:
I live in B'ville and can tell you, folks around here abuse the turning lane. Someone was cited by the police for the accident. Whoever got the ticket is at fault. By the way you describe it, it was the Miata driver, but it's not clear, since you could have pulled into the turning lane without a clear view of the oncoming traffic and the Miata was unable to stop in time.

Why did Arkansas move the Fayetteville airport to Bentonville in the 90's?
Question:
I have relatives in Fayetteville and had visited them in 1990 flying into the convenient Fayetteville airpoirt, close to town and the university. Recently I flew in again, only the airport is now in Bentonville. I was rather shocked at it's location. In the middle of NO WHERE, no hotels, no towns, and you have to drive on back country roads for 15 minutes before you even get to a main road. Then it's another 25 miles on the main highway before you get to the city. It took almost an hour - I can see that in NYC or San Fran, but this is a very small city. Why on earth would they move the airport so very far away in an area that has abundand farmland? You now MUST rent a car, because cab fare would be out of the question. The new airport was built in the 90's at a cost of $107 million dollars to the tax payers. Yes Walmart corporate headquarters is in Bentonville - I did notice many McMansions being built in the area, probably corporate people. I understand that the old airport might not have been able to be expanded, but why SO far away? Yes, Walmart seems like the most likely answer - and who was in office then? Clinton!! And who's wife worked on the board at Walmart?

Answer:
The old airport sat in a valley that made it very difficult to land large aircraft (and take off again) with the runway only being one mile long and unable to be expanded. Also with the growing number of people in the nwa area it was decided that a more centralo location should be considered. The main reason however was the problems with runway size, location in a valley, and inability to expand any furthur du to property rights (borders greenland)

Arrested because of foreign drivers license?
Question:
Two weeks ago I was driving in a 55 mph at 73, so I was 18mph over the limit. I was pulled over, and the police asked for my driver's license, I'm a mexican and arrived that day to work in Walmart in Bentonville Arkansas and was on a rental car. They told me a mexican's drivers licence is not valid in Arkansas, I asked how is it possible for people to travel here and that rental cars are rented. They didn't answer my questions, arrested me and towed the car. Now I have to go to court... Any tips or help would be appreciated. Update: I know I shouldn't be speeding, and I'm ok by getting a ticket for that. But I've travelled all my life to the US with a valid VISA and I've always used the mexican driver's licence without any problem. I've crossed the border by car and didn't have any issues. The police told me I couldn't use ANY driver's license except an american one, I was told the international permit doesn't work. I asked for any kind of paper where it said that and didn't get it. The rental agency requested me my driver's license when I took the car and told me that was valid. I asked the police this: "So nobody can travel to Arkansas from any part of the world and rent a car?" they told me that was correct. It's dumb you need a US driver's license if you're just going to be here for a week, and they give you first a temporal one where you have to drive with someone else and after a month they can give you a US driver's license. Update 2: I was not driving recklessly, I was driving over the speed limit, there was nobody on the road. You could kill someone by driving at 55 or 73. My question then is the following, does somebody know for sure if it's illegal to use a valid driver's license from another country in Arkansas? Best Regards

Answer:
Reckless driving is a serious crime. You could have killed someone. And yes, many states call any speed 15mph or more above the speed limit reckless. Whether or not a place rented you a car doesn't have anything to do with the law. If a minor walks into a store and buys alcohol that doesn't make it legal for them to drink it. Should the store have sold it? No. But that's certainly not a valid excuse for the minor to get drunk. Should the rental agency have given you the car? No. But that doesn't make you driving it less illegal. I suggest getting a really good lawyer. Be prepared to also be asked about your work visa.

Didn’t the Rich Help Make America Great, Too?.?
Question:
Didn’t the Rich Help Make America Great, Too?. In a recent campaign speech, Sen. Hillary Clinton said, “It is not rich people who made America great, it is hardworking Americans.” If you are rich, or know someone who is rich, this statement might strike you as extremely odd. When used in the same sentence, the terms “rich” and “hardworking” make for redundant prose. The rich are frequently driven by a relentless work ethic that causes them to toil extremely long hours in their chosen professions. Successful entrepreneurs, in fact, are rarely successful retirees, given the certain high they get from working hard. And unless they’re among the small percentage of Americans who inherited their wealth, they have become successful — and rich — only because they have solved previously unmet market needs. Indeed, contrary to the perception that the rich exploit their way to wealth, the surest path to riches involves fulfilling the desires of the vast majority of people who are not rich. For that alone, the rich are central to what has made America great. If you are in doubt about this fact, why not revisit a little business history. That John D. Rockefeller, forever synonymous with the word “rich,” named his company Standard Oil was no accident. At the time, the kerosene that Americans used to light their homes claimed an average of 6,000 deaths per year. But his consolidation of the previously inefficient and unwieldy kerosene industry made for a commodity that was increasingly accessible and safe for all Americans to use. Safe and efficient became the new standard. And while Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb, he created the first commercially viable incandescent bulb for the masses. In founding Edison Electric, thanks to financing from the very rich J.P. Morgan and the affluent Vanderbilt family, he made plain that “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.” Edison’s electricity innovations of course threatened Standard Oil’s kerosene products with obsolescence, but with Henry Ford’s founding of his eponymous car company in 1903, there was soon an even greater need for oil byproducts. Ford, who died a very rich man, created the Model T in 1908 with the average American in mind. And sure enough, the $825 price tag in 1908 fell every year thereafter, thus enabling more and more Americans to experience the freedom that comes with motorized transportation. See the progression? One entrepreneurs’ innovation leads to more innovation and more rich entrepreneurs. The story continues . . . With Americans increasingly traveling by car, Howard Johnson created a roadside restaurant chain of the same name in 1925. By 1952 it was the largest restaurant chain in the world — one that included affordable lodging for an American population on the go. Recognizing that there was room for more entrants in this space, Ray Kroc bought the small McDonald’s chain of restaurants and arguably made it the best-known brand name in the world. Then, as America’s middle class grew, consumer needs expanded, opening the door for Sam Walton who in 1962 founded the first Wal-Mart in Bentonville, Arkansas. While Walton’s creation made him America’s richest man, he enriched his customer base by offering previously inaccessible goods not only at low prices, but eventually the lowest prices possible. To this day, Wal-Mart shoppers get a “raise” every time they walk into one of these stores. More modernly, we have our mega-moguls in the technology space. Bill Gates’s creation of Microsoft made computer-operating software available to the masses while enabling both individuals and businesses to become exponentially more efficient. And the fact that computers are increasingly the norm in businesses, classrooms, and homes is in no small part due to Michael Dell’s innovations with inventory management. Dell made hardware that was once unique, ubiquitous. Notably, our rich entrepreneurs didn’t stop improving our lives with their commercial genius. From Rockefeller to Ford to Gates, they have established foundations that have and will continue to tackle the problems of education, poverty, and health that vex us to this day. And for tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, the wealth accumulated by our business forebears will serve as capital for new innovations that will continue to make our lives better and more fulfilling. Hillary Clinton wants to distinguish between the rich and the hardworking. But the two are not mutually exclusive. And while the senator is correct in lauding the efforts of industrious Americans, she is unwise to demean the staggering efforts of the vital few rich who have done so much to make America great.

Answer:
Many rich people supported the revolution for economic reasons. One of my ancestors was very active in financing the revolution, and you will find his signature on a lot of continental currency. He risked his life but he did it in hopes of reaping rewards himself every bit as much as for a new nation. I don't like Hillary, not even a little, but she is correct on this one. Those who become rich do so more by random happenstance than any other reason with the possible exception of those who disregard the law and human values. Many are good people. Had fate decreed that some other person end up with the chain of events that made them rich, that person might have been good too. Your concept of the staggering efforts of the rich is really kind of funny.
