Is it possible to live in Tempe, Arizona without a car? If no why exactly? I need specifics reasons.?
Question:
I'm transferring to Arizona State University, I don't have family there and I would like to know if its possible to live there without a car. Or if it's convenient.

Answer:
Assuming you are living on or very near campus, a car, while certainly convenient, is not necessary. ASU is the size of a small city with all necessary conveniences (shopping, entertainment) around it and within easy biking distance. Cars are also somewhat discouraged by ASU through high parking rates and limited parking areas (especially given the size of the student population). The Phoenix metroplex, however, is huge, and public transportation is not as sophisticated or convenient as in most similarly sized cities. (They are working on it, especially with the addition of new, but limited, light rail service, but it's not there yet.) If you plan on being anywhere for any length of time outside of Tempe, a car is pretty much mandatory. So, that needs to be your litmus test - how much time do you plan to be right in the heart of the campus and immediate surrounding areas versus how much time do you want to or need to spend outside of Tempe.

A couple years ago a friend took to a place in Tempe Arizona to look for a car it was called impounded cars for sale or something like that and he also showed the website, but I can't find it now either. anyone know of this place?

Answer:
For the most part, all insurance, repo and impounds are handled through a independent third party. Try http://easyexport.us/carfinder. This is a registered broker for Copart.com, and one of the only ways for the public to buy cars at a dealer only auction.

What is the estimated cost of transporting a car from Chicago, Illionis to Tempe, Arizona?
Question:
Do you think it would be better off just driving it down there or having it shipped? I am moving down there to go to school so I am just trying to figure out what is the easiest and most cost effective route to take. I am also not really looking forward to driving 25-28hours :-/ Thanks for your responce. After looking at a few websites I think I might just drive down there because on top of the cost of transportation, I will still need to get plane tickets and I will be without a car for 2 weeks (shipping time)....I am figureing gas will be about $200-250. So in the big picture that will be cheaper and easier. Thanks for the help

Any idea of fun things to do in Arizona?
Question:
Any suggestions for fun things to do in Arizona (for people who do not have a car)? Visiting Tempe for the next two months. I am 25 years old...I was really just interested in some key attractions of the state other than the Grand Canyon. Thanks to all who answered.

Answer:
Can you tell us a little more about what you are looking for? How old are you, do you have kids, what types of things do YOU consider Fun? If you are not to snobish to use public transportation, a car shouldn't matter too much. The buses go just about everywhere these days around town. Takes a little longer but you will get there. P.S. Okay, if you can rent a car or get with someone for a road trip, and you like the outdoors, I would recommend Sedona for some beautiful hiking, good jeep tours if you have a little money to spend, and if Oak Creek Canyon has recovered from the last fire it is a good time to go sliding in the creek there. On the way, if you enjoy animals, the Out of Africa park would be a nice stop. Personally, I enjoy Williams as a quaint little town, the grand Canyon Railway runs out of there and is a good way to get to the Canyon for a day trip. Even being older, I really like the Deer Farm just outside of Williams as well. In the Sedona area, there are also some old Indian ruins that you can hike up to that are located on the side of the mountain basically. In southern AZ, there are some cool caves (Karvarchtner or Colossal) and some good museums. There is also the old town of Tombstone which can be fun if you don't mind that it is a little cheesy touristy western stereotype. There is also a 'meteor crater' site down that way, I recall stopping when we were little but don't remember much. Tucson has a large observatory as well. Within the Metro area, if you like animals, the Wildlife World Zoo can be a nice day out, get to hand feed giraffes and go in and feed the wild birds and have them sit on you. AZ Science Center is worth a look depending on the exhibit going at the time or if you have kids with you. If you want to see Southwest animals and plants, the Botanical Gardens and Boyce Arboreteum are good. For cheesy touristy western town within the City, try Rawhide out at Wildhorse Pass on the south I-10. The casino is also near there. For just a good time, a lot of people will go to the Salt River and go tubing (need a friend with a car though). Gameworks at AZ Mills can also be fun if you like that type of thing and the mall itself is huge. Amazing Jake's can also be a fun time with friends but a bit pricey. If you like cars, check out the F1 Factory race track. Castles & Coasters is like a small theme park if you like that and it is across from MetroCenter mall. If you enjoy shopping or people watching, head over to Mill Avenue in Tempe, they also have regular events and boating on the weekends. We used to enjoy the 3-in-1 bar located at the outdooe mall on 3rd St & Van Buren but not certain if it is still there. All 3 of the major water parks should be opening soon (Big Surf, Water World, SunSplash) and there is also the wave pool at Kiwanis Rec Center. All of these places can be accessed on the bus. If I think of others, I'll add them later. You can also check out the Phoenix section of About.com for seasonal events and activities in town.

Regarding the roads in Phoenix/Tempe Arizona...?
Question:
I'm going to be taking a trip out that way in a few months, but I was wondering how the roads are...are they all 10 lanes and insanely crowded like in Florida/Southern California? I'm wondering if I should rent a car or if I'd be better off just using the busses/walking.

Answer:
Hi,Hubby and I lived there for 17 years, in Tempe, worked in Phoenix, not as bad as Calif. been there several times, really bad in CA, not as bad in Phx,Temp, Scotts area but will be mostly 8 lanes, I17 through phoenix gets crazy and backed up crowded, interstate 60 through mesa and tempe can be bad too, i would suggest you rent a car. Although public trans is good, phx, scottsdale, tempe all have their own bus service, I would still suggest car, Tempe is great walking and biking around downtown Mill Avenue at the University, all the downtowns are good to walk but to get from one to the other, I would definantly rent car. Have a great time and dont forget to dress cool until October, when it cools off finally!!
