Can you get to Fairbanks Alaska by car in the winter time? Answer: Yes you can...if you come out of Vancouver Washington you take highway 99 in Canada to highway 97 to highway 1 into Alaska and take highway 2 into Fairbanks. Go to mapquest.com it is 2450 miles from the US border of WA and Canada to Fairbanks. Not saying it would be a smooth trip this time of year but those roads are open mostly year round unless blizzards are there and that is possible. |

Getting a car from Fairbanks to Anchorage, Alaska? Question: ok so i have a car, that is NOT running, in fairbanks alaska, and in need it to be transported to anchorage. ive tried looking but all i can find is companies that ship to and from the lower 48. does anyone know of companies that would do this and the approx. price. thanks Answer: your best bet is to find someone that can tow from fairbanks to anchorage, like someone with a dually and trailer. a guy that's retired but does have a truck he uses for towing would likely be interested. that's the way people are in alaska, in my experience. put an ad on craigslist or ask around. best of luck. |

Sleeping in your car in Fairbanks , Alaska? Question: Curious to see if anybody has tried living in their car in Fairbanks in both hot and cold weather. I know of many who don't make a lot of money so they sleep in their car , van or pick-up truck instead of renting an apartment. I would really like to hear from somebody who has done this for a long time while working a regular full or part time job in Fairbanks. What kind of work did you do ? What did you do to kill time when bored ? Did you have to keep a cell phone or were to able to get a job without a phone number on your job application ? Were you able to keep yourself warm under tons of blankets ? Thanks ! Answer: Your car? Really? That would suck. Although I never really lived in my car, I did try sleeping in it for a job I had where I had to travel alot. It was not fun. Granted, my car was not exactly sleeping friendly as it did not have bench seats, maybe yours is better suited for it. Maybe some better options would be to stay at a campground - either a free one, or one like KOA that has showers and stuff. Or how about a hostel? I saw one in Fairbanks that only cost $10 per day. Maybe you could sleep in your car one night, and then do the hostel thing the next night so that you can take a shower. Or get on Craigslist and see if you can rent a room at someone's house for cheap. How about finding someone that's renting a room, but tell them you'll mow their lawn for free if they deduct some money off rent. Or try being a house sitter. Go stay at a shelter like Goodwill or whatever. Or rent out a small storage unit or something. I would do any of those things first before sleeping in my car. |

Will a Jeep Compass 4x4 survive an Alaskan winter in Fairbanks Alaska? Question: Considering buying a Jeep Compass, I currently have a Dodge Neon ACR. The compass seems to be the best 4x4 around for my price range 18k - 21k... but with winters with an average -15 F I am wondering if I will have to get the car outfitted with some sort of winterized package or something? I am currently in Las Vegas, and I move in 3 months... Should I buy the car here, in Alaska, or back 'home' in texas? If you buy a car in another state do you still have to buy the license in that state and then again when you take the car to your destination state? Never done this before :( Cars in Alaska seem to be 3 to 4k more expencive on the dealers websites... I have free transportation for one vehicle to Alaska (Military), so Im not worried about any sort of expense of getting the car up there. Answer: buy one in Alaska that will take care of all the tax and tittle questions and it should already be able to handle cold weather(special antifreeze and block heater ) |

Chicago, Ill to Fairbanks, Alaska -- best way to get there? Question: Would it be cheaper to drive or fly. I figured about $1000 to drive and that would probably be sleeping cheaply, like in the car half the time, if that is allowed in Canada? Though even that much money is not available yet. What do flights cost? More or less? Just an idea. Are there any different driving rules of the road in Canada than in the US? Or would a boat be the best route? It all boils down to cost, mostly. Just want to get some ideas for a future trip, thanks. Answer: If money is an issue....consider the high price of gas now and tourist season has just begun. Motels and cafes have all upped their prices. If time is an issue....be warned that it is now road repair time so expect lots of slow going and many stops. You will also be behind lots of RVs, too. If neither time nor money is an issue I say drive the AlCan as it is a wonderful way to see Canada and Alaska! Also, if you drive, be sure to have your papers in order when crossing the border. |

How much to ship a car from Oklahoma to Alaska? Question: I'm stationed in Ft. Wainwright (Fairbanks) Alaska and I'm getting married in July so I won't have the benefit of the military paying for my vehicle being shipped since I wasn't married before I came up here.... anyone have an estimate on a price? Thanks in advance. Answer: I recently had to ship a vehicle from San Francisco to Houston and was amazed at the high shipping prices. After looking for an alternative, my friend referred me to a website called www.uship.com where i found a company who shipped it for $600 under what i was previously quoted. Another cool thing about uShip is that they have a free price estimator so you can see what kind of rates you can find for your car. You didn't specify which city in OK you are shipping from, so I just put Oklahoma City, and I got $1325 to ship your car. |
