Has anyone ever driven a car to Anchorage Alaska from their home state? Question: Me and my friend want to drive out to Anchorage Alaska from New York... we found directions on google but not sure if its possible. Has anyone ever driven there? from a state. Answer: Absolutely!! I'm from Anchorage, too, and I've driven to the lower 48. It will take you awhile, but you'll get there. It's a beautiful drive, and once you're on the Alcan Highway (upper Canada) you may want to bring a tent and camp out for a night or two. It's a ton of fun with a friend. I wouldn't rely on google earth, though, using it around here for me sometimes hasn't worked that great--not too accurate.I'd go to borders and look in some map books for specific instructions. (By the way, while you're on a roadtrip, after spending some time in Anchorage, driving to Juneau (capitol) is beautiful) It takes about 2 days depending on how fast you go, and on the last part you take a ferry to get from Skagway to Juneau itself. Personally, I think Juneau is one of the prettiest towns I've ever seen. Surrounded by mountains everywhere you go.) Hope I helped! |

Does anyone know where I can rent a toddler car seat in Anchorage, Alaska? Question: My family is traveling to Seward, Alaska for a cruise in May 2010. I need to rent a toddler car seat for the week. We have a 2 hour drive from Anchorage to Seward. Thank you! Answer: Every rental car agency will offer child seats for rent. I don't rent in Alaska because I live here, but when I've done it elsewhere, car seats are about $5/day. That's really high for something with someone else's spit-up and cheerios on it, but you wouldn't have to carry something with you. If you have a beater car seat, you could check it on the airline and have it with you. Or you could bring a good one both ways with you. I don't think you pay a baggage fee for it. Certainly not if you carry it to the gate and "gate check" it. Alaska Airlines is especially nice to families and will let you "baby block" a seat when you get to the airport. That makes the seat next to you, the last one they sell. It increases your chances of having a free seat to put your child in a car seat on the plane. Which lets them sleep more easily. Which lets you sleep more easily. Alaska will also sell a seat for an <2 year old for 1/2 price and then you have a gauranteed seat for them. There is a Costco and two Wallmarts in Anchorage so if you're willing to be illegal for 6 milesfrom the airport, you could buy a basic infant seat for $25-35 and skip the rental fee. Or do that before you go and have it with you. Salvation Army and Goodwill usually won't offer carseats for liability reasons. Even in Alaska. They do resell skiis, which no one in the 48 states does, but I haven't seen carseats at the Anchorage second-hand stores. Although I've seen them (and offered them) on freecycle.com. Compared to the cost of the cruise, just spring for the rental car agency's car seat. But I've tried to lay out some other options as well. |

is it possible to rent a car at anchorage, alaska and drive through canada to seattle and return it there? Question: i want to rent a car at anchorage and drive to seattle. is it possible that i drive through canada and go to seattle and return it there before i return back home to bangkok? Answer: I am sure it is. Check with the rental car company. The rental car company might have a policy about taking the car into Canada, but every company I have used could have cared less. Keep in mind that Canada requires special proof of insurance cards. Check with your insurance agent before you go to get one of these cards (since it sounds like you are from Thailand, perhaps check with the rental company before hand). In terms of renting in one city and driving to another, this can be done, but expect to pay top dollar to do so. I drove a car from Chicago and left it in Milwaukee (about 100 miles) for one day and it cost me about $250. |

Can I make more money as car salesman in anchorage Alaska than San Jose? Question: I know there is only one dealer per brand in anchorage Alaska, so I assume I can make more gross per car than here in San Jose,ca. Can anyone tell me more detail about this? According to edmunds.com, the average selling cost is close to MSRP which almost impossible here in San Jose. I also would like to how much dealer ship charging the pack(usually anywhere between 250-350 per sale). Thanks Answer: I doubt it, there are simply MILLIONS more people to sell to the San Jose then Anchorage. And teh few buyers there will buy from the local salesman who is in their community, not some newbie from outside. |

How long would it take to go from Anchorage Alaska to Seattle by car? Question: I am planning on driving from Alaska to Seattle, and would like to understand if this can be done? Or am I crazy to even think about it... any information would be helpful. Thanks. Answer: Here's an answer from someone who has done the trip many times: 2350 miles. 48 hours if you really keep moving. I've done that driving solo, sleeping a few hours each night and otherwise driving at or 5-10 over the limit the whole time. The few people I've known to do it quicker were like 2-3 college students going off to school and were rotating drivers. Then, maybe, 42-45 hours would be possible. It is a spectacular trip. Well worth doing at some point in your life. The Alaskan Highway is paved the whole and if someone starts talking about 4WD and tow ropes, and extra gas cans, ignore them. Either they drove it 30 years ago (I did) or they read about the earliest trips up the Alcan. You could do the whole thing on a moped and I prefer a compact car because they are less tiring to drive than a big truck. There's gas every 250 miles or so on the main route. Towns and grocery stores and motels and campground all along the way. It IS a LONG way for the non-road-warrior. If 400 miles in a day is a lot of driving for you, then you'll be at it for a week. Still a great, very scenic trip, but after a while you can get tired of billions of spruce trees amongst untouched mountains and rivers. I prefer April or early May or late September or early October. No bugs, no motorhomes, no road construction and no snow. It takes another 12 hours in summer or winter due to those delays and slower average speed. Buy "The Milepost" at any bookstore in Alaska. Or amazon. About $24. It is the bible for the Alcan and all the parallel highways in the north woods. Mile-by-mile descriptions of the road and services along the way. |

How to get cheap cabin in Anchorage, Alaska? Should we rent a car also? Question: My bf and I are going to Alaska (Anchorage) in June and we`re trying to get cheap hotels, but reading thru the internet we see that cabins are supposed to be cheaper. How can we get a good plan on what to see and where to stay and what to do of course without expending that much money. Answer: Renting a cabin would be a great idea, and there are a lot of choices for rentals in the Anchorage area. I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend, so I would say that it's best to do your homework and use online research to find available places to stay that fit within your budget. Rather than give you a specific property name and location, I would suggest that you do some research on the available cabins, the prices and the locations. I have used justvr.com in the past and it was quite helpful for narrowing down my choices and booking a few nights stay. |

Can I rent a car one-way from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska? Question: I'm trying to plan a trip to drive up the Alaska Highway from Seattle however I only want to do the drive one way. I can't seem to find any car rental companies allowing a one-way drop off in Anchorage. Does anyone know if this can be done?? Answer: I found the following information below at the top source link I posted farther down. "Any U.S. Citizen renting a vehicle in the U.S. may drive across the U.S./Canadian border with no restrictions. The driver may be asked by Customs to show a rental agreement and a form of identification, such as a driver's license." The bottom source link has more information about one-way rentals. If you can't find a car rental company, then search for driveaway companies. |
